Protecting Plants Project

Achieved July 2022.  We needed to protect young plants from rabbits and birds (esp. pigeons and pheasants), so, we developed a system of recycled water pipe hoops and netting.  The recycled blue, semi rigid plastic water piping was sourced from building sites/skips and donations of old water pipe from a kind Mark B .  We invested in steel ‘pins/bars’ (like rebars, from local fabricator Parker Steel, about 30 cms long and in a range of diameters 3mm-10mm, as we have a range of diameters with the blue piping). These metal pins/bars go into the ground in pairs, one either side of a growing row, and the plastic piping slips over these metal ‘pins’ to create a hoop shape that is kept strong by the pins.  We have invested in long lasting, high quality netting to prevent wildlife getting ensnared in flimsy, flappy netting. To date we have never had a creature caught or come to any harm in our protection nets.
