‘No Dig’ and Soil Health
We have approx 70 ‘No Dig’ growing beds filled with vegetables/fruit and some cut flowers. The blooms are grown and nurtured by @nettleandbloomuk.
Our ‘No Dig’ beds were created by following Charles Dowding’s approach, with a carpet of cardboard laid down onto of the ground (grass/weeds). 90cm-1m wide Rows were allocated as the growing beds and to these compost was layered onto of the cardboard. Either side of these growing rows we placed a line of supermarket ‘veg boxes’ (the ones that they receive veg and fruit in) onto of the cardboard. This created a double thickness of cardboard for the paths. The boxes were then filled with woodchip. Whilst we flattened down the ends of the ‘veg’ boxes so that they could flow into each other, we left the long sides of the boxes and these sides created a divide to separate the adjacent layer of compost bed from the woodchip paths. Click here for how we construct our ‘no dig’ beds - these were the ones we created recently for planting squash.
