Herb Garden
What is a herb garden?
A garden dedicated to growing culinary and medicinal herbs.
Why is it important?
It provides a corner of the community garden to focus directly on wellbeing. Acting as a sanctuary at the heart of a busy and expanding community garden, the planned herb area is to be a sensory space allowing everyone to access and experience the culinary textures, tastes, and aromas of herbs. We hope too, that this will allow us to expand our conversation around cooking, healthy living and food. In addition, we would like to explore medicinal herbs more, and for members to be able to attend courses at Dilston and/or Chelsea Physic Gardens in order to grow our understanding and knowledge of the medicinal benefits of herbs.
A diverse range of herb species will be grown, (inspired by Jekka McVicar and Dilston Physic Garden). In particular, we will be celebrating the drought tolerant credentials of herbs like Borage, Echinacea, Myrtle, Tarragon, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Being located in the driest region of the UK, we recognise the importance of climate adaption/resilience in ensuring the longevity of the garden. And to this end, My Society have also generously supported the initial development of the Herb ‘Dry’ Garden.
Right from the start, in 2021, the proposed herb/wellbeing space was identified by members as an integral part of the overall vision for our community garden. The herb project will be built by the community for the community
What’s the dream?
To enjoy the simplicity of having somewhere tranquil to sit every day, and also to learn and share knowledge about culinary and medicinal herbs, and thus have even more to offer on event days and school visits.
We would like the proposed herb garden to have climate resilience credentials, community bonding opportunities and genuine educational potential.
